Who we are & what we do
Established in 1972, the Woodland Trust is the UK's leading woodland
conservation charity. We achieve this through lobbying and campaigning, acquisition, restoration and management of woodland sites, creating new woods by planting native trees to buffer and expand existing woodland, and promoting
the benefits of trees and woodland to society.
Bringing people closer to nature and increasing awareness through positive
experience with trees and woods is important to the future of our woodland
heritage. In particular, we want to ensure that people have access to woodland
close to where they live and that young people have inspirational opportunities for discovery and learning. We have more than 1,000 sites in our care, covering over 20,000 hectares (50,000 acres).
We have four long term aims, which we call the 'four outcomes':
- Preventing further loss of ancient woodland
- Improving woodland biodiversity
- Increasing new native woodland
- Promoting people's enjoyment and understanding of woodland
The five priority themes for 2007-9 are:
- Land-based activity
- Influencing others
- Communication and engagement
- Income generation
- Organisational effectiveness
